No 1 African tennis player asks for Mauritian nationality

APA - Port Louis (Mauritius) The No 1 under 18 African tennis player, the Malagasy Lofo Ramiaramanana is ready to accept Mauritian nationality, APA learnt here.

A communiqué issued Wednesday by the Mauritius Tennis Federation (MTF) writes that the mother of the player, Ms Fanja Ramiaramanana had last Monday contacted the MTF in this regard. "If the proposition made to us in 2004 still holds good, we are ready to accept the offer to grant Mauritian nationality to my son," writes the mother.

Ms Ramiaramanana further explains that her son who is currently a team member of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is presently training in South Africa will no longer have the financial help of the ITF after 2007. Since her son intends playing as a professional after 2007 and that the Malagasy Tennis Federation does not have the financial capability to help him further his career, it would be better for her son to apply for Mauritian nationality as had been offered to him.

"Mauritius projects the image of a country which has a real will to be a leader in sports on the African continent in regards to its organisation of sporting events and in the promotion of local sports," highlighted Ms Ramiaramanana.

Mr Akhtar Toorawa, Secretary of the MTF has expressed his delight at the decision of the family of the young Lofo, arguing that this new comer will not take the place of young Mauritian tennis players as there is already a lack of men and women players to complete the local teams which would like to compete in the Davis or FED cups.

Two other tennis players, the Bulgarian Dessislava Lazarova and the South African Justine Sutherland have also agreed in principle to take Mauritian nationality and play under the Mauritian flag. Both stress that their decision to play for Mauritius have been prompted by the presence of Mauritian teams in most international and continental tournaments, which is not necessarily the case in their own countries.
